What happened

On the morning of Saturday 30 May 2026, Munich Airport (Flughafen Muenchen) temporarily suspended flight operations after a suspected drone was reported over the airfield, as reported by ZDFheute. The stop began at around 09:00 local time, when two crews of departing aircraft told air traffic control they had seen a drone. German aviation outlet Aerobuzz.de reported that operations were held for roughly an hour before resuming.

Inbound aircraft were placed in holding patterns and then diverted while departures stayed on the ground. According to ZDFheute, about 20 Munich-bound flights were diverted to alternative airports including Frankfurt am Main, Nuremberg and Vienna, with cancellations and delays during the busy Pentecost (Pfingsten) holiday travel period. Aerobuzz.de reported that the first aircraft to land after the resumption was United Airlines flight UA102, a Boeing 777-200ER from Washington, which touched down at about 10:24.

The Bundespolizei (Federal Police) deployed a helicopter to search the airport grounds but found nothing. A police spokesperson told ZDFheute that nothing was found (Es wurde nichts gefunden), and no drone was recovered and no operator was identified. Authorities said a threat to air traffic could be ruled out and reopened the airfield.

Assessment

No actor has been publicly named for this sighting. Because no drone was recovered and no operator identified, responsibility is unconfirmed and the event is recorded as unattributed pending further reporting. It is distinct from the October 2025 Munich Airport drone closures, whose speculation about possible Russian involvement (denied by the Kremlin) has not been officially attached to this incident. The brief halt fits a wider 2026 pattern of drone-related airspace disruption across Europe, alongside cases such as the Lithuania air-raid alert over a drone near Vilnius, though no link is established. This entry may change as new public information emerges.
