Arson on a signalling distribution box halts the Hamburg-Cuxhaven line at Neu Wulmstorf

In the night of 14 July 2026, at about 01:15, a witness reported a fire at a technical building at the Elstorfer Heuweg level crossing in Neu Wulmstorf in the Harburg district of Lower Saxony. When emergency services arrived that fire had almost burned out without causing damage, but responders found a distribution box burning about 50 metres away. The fire destroyed signalling cables.

Train services on the Hamburg to Cuxhaven line between Hamburg-Neugraben, Buxtehude and Stade were suspended. According to ZDFheute and Logistik Heute more than 200 services were cancelled and replaced by buses, and regional traffic was only partially restored in the evening. Federal police and Lower Saxony state police secured evidence at both fire sites and completed their work at about 04:30. A spokesperson for the Harburg police inspection said investigators were assuming deliberate arson.

The fire came four days after the incendiary sabotage of the Cologne-Duesseldorf railway near Leverkusen, one of several attacks on German rail infrastructure in 2026 that investigators have linked to left-extremist actors.

No suspect has been identified, no motive has been established and no claim of responsibility has been confirmed by police. The choice of target, a signalling distribution box whose destruction disables a whole section rather than a single train, matches the method used in other recent attacks on German railways, but similarity of method is not attribution. Deutsche Bahn has recorded a rising number of criminal acts against its infrastructure, most of them ordinary vandalism and theft rather than politically motivated sabotage.
