What happened

Overnight from 24 to 25 April 2026, fragments of a Russian war drone fell on the northern outskirts of Galați, in southeastern Romania, during a large overnight Russian drone barrage against Ukrainian targets near the Danube river border. According to Romania's Ministry of National Defence (MApN), the fragments landed on the morning of 25 April in a residential area of the Galați municipality, in the Bariera Traian zone close to the shore of Lake Brateș. No casualties were reported.

The debris damaged a household outbuilding, an annex of a property, and an electricity pole, as reported by U.S. News (Reuters) and by the Romanian broadcaster Digi24. As the fragments carried an explosive charge, the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, supported by Police and Gendarmerie, evacuated residents along the recovery route while the remains were transported by military vehicle. Romanian-language reporting from Radio România noted that additional drone fragments were detected in neighbouring Tulcea county.

A joint team of specialists from the Ministry of National Defence, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Romanian Intelligence Service moved the fragments to a specially designated area on the shore of Lake Brateș and carried out a controlled detonation at about 2:20 p.m. local time, the MApN said. The ministry strongly condemned what it called the Russian Federation's irresponsible actions, and Bucharest summoned the Russian ambassador over the cross-border impact.

Assessment

Romanian authorities assess the debris as fallout from a Russian drone, likely incidental spillover from strikes on Ukrainian Danube ports rather than a confirmed deliberate attack on NATO territory; Moscow made no categorical admission. The case stands out because Russian-origin fragments physically damaged property on Romanian soil, marking a notable threshold in a recurring 2026 pattern of strayed or spillover drones reaching NATO states. It is distinct from the later Russian Geran-2 (Shahed) drone strike on a Galați residential block in May 2026. Investigation continues, and this entry may be updated as further public information emerges.
