St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church (Barrie, ON) significant fire; man charged with arson
What happened
A significant fire broke out at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church at 47 Owen Street in downtown Barrie, Ontario, on the evening of Sunday, 19 February 2023. According to Barrie police, the blaze was deliberately set at around 10 p.m., with an exterior fire started at the south side of the historic building. Crews responded after flames were seen at the rear of the church. The fire spread into the structure and gutted the church's Christian education wing, a section dating back to the First World War, leaving interior walls stripped back to the brick and studs.
The fire caused extensive damage, with figures cited at roughly $2 million and rising in early reporting and later put at about $2.5 million, and it also required asbestos remediation. No injuries were reported. Barrie police charged Lance Freeman, 37, of no fixed address, in connection with several fires set in the area that night. He faced three counts of arson and a charge of failure to comply with a probation order, and he was held in custody. As CTV News later reported, the accused pleaded guilty to arson. The damage was severe enough that the congregation subsequently decided to close the downtown church.
Assessment
This was a domestic Canadian criminal matter, not an incident linked to any foreign actor or hybrid-warfare campaign. Barrie police treated it as arson and charged a local individual, who later entered a guilty plea. Reporting connected the church fire to a series of fires set in the downtown area the same night, pointing to an isolated criminal episode rather than a coordinated or politically motivated act. No political or ideological motive was established in the available reporting, and the case proceeded through the ordinary criminal courts.
