What happened

On the afternoon of 22 May 2023, fire destroyed the historic St. Bernard Mission Church in the hamlet of Grouard in northern Alberta. RCMP were called to assist firefighters at about 3:30 p.m., and crews from Grouard, Enilda, Joussard and High Prairie spent hours battling the blaze. Most of the structure and its contents were lost. Built in 1902, the church was one of the oldest in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Grouard-McLennan and held altar paintings, hand-stencilled decoration and original artwork associated with Bishop Émile Grouard. RCMP said a preliminary investigation indicated the fire was suspicious in nature.

The next day, RCMP announced charges against two men from High Prairie: Kenneth Ferguson, 56, and Gerald Capot, 50. Each was charged with break and enter to commit theft and with arson, according to Global News. Both were remanded after a judicial interim hearing, with a court appearance scheduled in High Prairie for 29 May 2023. Grouard borders the Kapawe'no First Nation and was the site of the St. Bernard Mission, which included a residential school operated by the Catholic Church from the 1890s until 1961. In 2021, the Kapawe'no First Nation reported locating evidence of potential unmarked graves at the former mission site, underscoring the area's painful history.

Assessment

This was a domestic Canadian criminal incident, not an act of organized or foreign-directed sabotage. RCMP investigated the fire as arson and charged two local men with arson and break-and-enter to commit theft; no political or ideological motive was alleged in the reporting reviewed. The loss is significant given the church's age, its standing as one of the region's oldest Catholic structures, and the sensitive residential-school history of the Grouard mission site. Reporting reflects the charges as laid; guilt is determined by the courts, and the case should be understood in that ordinary criminal-justice context.
