St. Jean Baptiste Church (Morinville, AB) destroyed by fire

In the early hours of 30 June 2021, fire destroyed St. Jean Baptiste Catholic Church, a landmark in the town of Morinville, roughly 35 km north of Edmonton, Alberta. Emergency crews were called around 3:20 a.m. and arrived to find the blaze already fully involved from the basement. Rapid interior collapse forced firefighters into a defensive exterior posture. About 50 firefighters from several surrounding jurisdictions battled the fire, which was brought under control just before 7 a.m. The building, whose congregation had held its first service around 1907-1908, was a complete loss; its bells were later recovered for a planned replacement. Nearby buildings were evacuated and sustained minor smoke and water damage, but no injuries were reported.

RCMP treated the fire as suspicious from the outset; it was subsequently classified as an arson and has remained unsolved, with no charges laid as of 2024. In February 2025, Morinville RCMP renewed a public appeal, releasing descriptions of three men seen acting suspiciously near the church around the time of the fire and last seen leaving in an early-1990s pickup truck. The fire occurred amid a wave of fires and vandalism at churches across Canada in the summer of 2021, following the reported discovery of unmarked graves at former Indian residential school sites, including Kamloops, B.C., and Marieval, Saskatchewan. Alberta Premier Jason Kenney condemned the church burnings as criminal acts.

This is a domestic Canadian incident with no connection to foreign interference or hybrid warfare. RCMP have treated the fire as suspicious and classified it as arson, but it remains unsolved and no motive has been formally established. It is widely understood in the context of a broader 2021 wave of suspicious fires at Canadian churches that followed announcements of unmarked graves at former residential schools. Any link between this specific fire and that reckoning is contextual and unconfirmed; investigators have not publicly attributed a motive.
